Maxwell Doig
Maxwell Doig was born in Huddersfield in 1966. He graduated from Manchester School of Art in 1988 with a BA (Honours) degree in Fine Art. Doig pursued his postgraduate studies in Fine Art at the Slade School of Art during 1988-90. He was awarded the Villiers David Prize in 1997.
Besides the instant accessibility and visual gratification of Doig’s paintings there are many compelling aspects, which are not immediately apparent. For instance, the influence of Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper and Prunella Clough in relation to their use of tone and texture and Doig’s use of white. Modernism too, by way of Mark Rothko, is embraced by his use of large areas of colour and geometric shapes.
Another notable feature of his work is the aerial views – a characteristic of his work for the past six years. These oblique viewpoints have a tendency to emphasise the stillness of the static, solitary figures and subjects. There is no movement - only quiet reflection or introspection.
Doig’s technique seeks to accentuate light, tone and texture. He builds up layers of paint onto the canvas then sands and scrapes back the impasto to create a surface which resembles the subject he is describing, for example, wood or concrete. The background surfaces have a bleached out dry quality closer to egg tempera than creamy oil paint.
Doig’s work reflects all the hallmarks of craftsmanship and realism with an inventive and unique vision. He is a bold, gritty painter of unconventional compositions and stunning imagery executed with great skill and integrity.
